What is timber floor bleaching?

Timber floor bleaching is a process that lightens or whitens the natural colour of wood floors, making them appear brighter and more contemporary. It works brilliantly with naturally dark timbers to achieve a tone that is impossible with other methods.

This bleaching technique is commonly used to achieve a more uniform appearance for a timber floor. A weathered, pale, sun-bleached or washed-out timber look can be achieved which can create a more relaxed, coastal or rustic vibe in a room.

The process involves the application of a bleaching agent to the timber floor. Once applied, the chemical reacts with the timber's natural tannins and oils. This then works to visibly brighten the complexion of the wood's surface by lightening the colour and reducing the depth of the wood’s natural tone.

BEFORE making the final decision to have your timber floors BLEACHED, please consider the following:

Potential wood damage:  Over-bleaching or improper application can damage the wood, leading to uneven surfaces or weakened timber. It’s important to use the right products and apply them carefully.

Long-term maintenance:  Lightened wood can sometimes require more frequent maintenance or refinishing, especially if exposed to sunlight or heavy foot traffic.

Colour sensitivity:  Different types of timber will respond differently to bleaching, with some woods lightening more than others.

If you are considering timber floor bleaching, it’s a good idea to consult with an experienced professional who understands the materials and process to achieve the best results for your flooring. Please contact us for more information.

Day-to-day maintenance

Lighter floors tend to show less dust and dirt, making them easier to maintain.

Create a light, bright look

Timber floor bleaching can brighten up a room by lightening the wood, making it feel more spacious, fresh and airy.

Aesthetic appeal

The pale, neutral tones are versatile and complementary to a wide range of interior styles, including modern and minimalist interiors. Bleaching is often used to give floors a bleached or sun-washed look, making it ideal for achieving coastal, beachy, or Scandinavian-style interiors.

Enhance grain and texture

Bleaching can subtly enhance the natural grain and texture of the wood, making it more prominent, especially when combined with other finishing techniques.

Remove stains and discolorations

If the floor has stains or uneven discoloration, bleaching can help reduce the visibility of imperfections and create a more uniform surface.

Our 7 step timber floor bleaching PROCESS

STEP 1

Inspection of your timber floors

We begin by inspecting your timber floors and discussing your desired look . This ensures we understand exactly what you are looking for.

STEP 2

Timber floor surface preparation

Like sanding or staining, bleaching requires proper preparation. The floor must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, grime and previous finishes.

STEP 3

Timber floor bleaching application

A specialized bleach solution is applied to the timber floor. Depending on the type of bleach and the desired level of lightness, this could be a gentle, diluted bleach solution or a stronger compound designed specifically for timber.

STEP 4

Reaction time

The bleach needs time to react with the wood’s surface. This reaction will lighten the wood and bring out the lighter shades. The duration will depend on the wood type and the effect you want to achieve.

STEP 5

Neutralization and rinsing

After the desired bleaching effect is achieved, the floor is thoroughly rinsed and neutralized to stop the bleaching process and ensure that the wood isn’t damaged.

STEP 6

Finishing

Once the bleaching process is complete, the wood is usually sealed with a protective varnish or oil to protect the newly bleached timber floor surface from wear – this will give a great shine or a matte appearance, depending on your preference.

STEP 7

Final inspection and clean-up

Once the project is completed, we inspect your timber floor to ensure a flawless finish has been achieved. Your newly bleached timber floor will be left looking stunning with a smooth, even tone and long-lasting protection. We then clean and tidy our work area.
